Are you interested in careers that serve the public interest? Apply for the NextGen Civic Leader Corps project and the UW Community Engagement and Leadership Education (CELE) Center summer fellowship program for students interested in exploring careers in nonprofit or government organizations. 

Jackson Munro Public Service Fellowship: will support students in identifying a public service internship and/or developing a work plan with their community-based partner organization. Applications are welcomed from students:
1) with ongoing work with community-based organizations and/or those working in local, state, or federal government internships, OR
2) who are interested and need support in identifying or securing a position

Students selected into the fellowship will work with program staff to develop internships in the late spring, then complete their community-based work and participate in cohort activities during the summer months. Fellows receive a $5000 stipend for completing an internship of 200 hours (or more) between May and September. Ongoing participation in the NextGen Civic Leader Corps is encouraged, but not required.

Domestic Study Away Opportunity, Summer 2024: Honors American South: Foundations of Black Culture, Social Movements, and Collective Liberation
Students will travel through ten states–from Houston, TX to Washington, DC! In addition to visiting historical sites and memorials to significant moments in American history, students will meet with foot soldiers from the civil rights movement and community leaders who continue to push forward conversations about racial justice and reconciliation.
The program is designed to meet several general education requirements for any UW undergraduate. It will meet elective requirements for the American Ethnic Studies major, Leadership minor, and Interdisciplinary Honors requirements.

Bringing the physicists’ perspective to the beautiful and complex phenomena of life is exciting, and we have a large group of faculty who will be communicating this excitement to the students with lectures, seminars, and hands-on exercises. At the same time we try to reinforce and fill in background material, both in physics and in biology. Washington NASA Space Grant ConsortiumSURP gives students the opportunity to work in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) research position that will complement their studies.  Student researchers work under the guidance of a faculty member, postdoctoral scholar or research scientist at UW.  Applicants are selected by the faculty member supervising the individual projects.  Once selected, the student and faculty adviser establish a schedule of work time and goals for the project.  Students may apply for either part-time or full-time positions. SIAM | Society for Industrial and Applied MathematicsThe Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has partnered with the Livermore Lab Foundation (LLF) to support undergraduate students seeking to advance their applied mathematics skills in a world-class research facility addressing some of society’s greatest scientific and technological challenges. LLF- SIAM 2023 Undergraduate Fellows will work closely – as individuals and as a cohort – with nationally recognized staff mentors on projects aligned with student interests and skills. Students with both specific and broad interests in applied mathematics, computational science, and/or data science are encouraged to apply.

SELECTION CRITERIA
– Candidates should be an upper-level undergraduate for the 2023-24 academic year, and be in good academic standing at their home institution.
– Candidates must be willing to provide regular updates to LLF and SIAM and to promote their fellowship experience (e.g., public speaking events, student outreach, newsletter articles, etc.).
– Candidates with demonstrated financial need may receive special consideration.

WHAT: EDGE is a 4-week, residential session designed to prepare a cohort of mathematicians to thrive in their PhD programs in the mathematical sciences

The EDGE summer programACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

– Weekly colloquium on a variety of research topics.

Are you a recent college graduate or graduating in Spring 2022, and interested in public service here in King County?  The County is offering five paid, year-long fellowships, giving fellows the chance to see the inside workings of government. 

– Fellows can decide which of 6 agencies they would like to be placed in:  the Executive’s Office of Performance Strategy and Budget (PSB); Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP); Department of Executive Services – Facilities Management Division (DES-FMD); and Metro Transit (MTD). One fellow will be assigned to work with King County Council (KCC) and Department of Human Resources – Learning and Development (DHR-L&D) for a total period of twelve months, six months with KCC and six months with DHR.

Learning Objectives:
– Build knowledge and understanding of specific branches of county government and their operations;
– Learn how projects, policies, and legislation are created and implemented;
– Understand the impact and importance of civic engagement;
– Develop an appreciation for the importance of public service in its many forms from elected officials and staff to stakeholders, and clients; and
– Deepen and enhance skills for building a career in the public sector.

Work assignments will vary and can include:
– Providing project support for government initiatives;
– Assisting with strategic planning activities;

The MSK Bridge Program from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center aims to provide post-baccalaureate trainees from traditionally underrepresented (URM) groups with a strong foundation in science and research, as well as guided mentoring that will help them successfully transition into biomedical PhD programs. Bridge Scholars will conduct a research project in one of MSK’s scientific laboratories for up to 24 months.

The DOE OTT Entrepreneurship Program gives students the opportunity to participate in research, technical or policy-related projects under the mentorship of technology transfer specialists and OTT staff.  Students come away with a better understanding of how technology transitions from the lab into practice, and gain insight into how this is influenced by the policies created and implemented by federal government. 

Stipend:  $700/week
Travel:  Up to $1,000 for inbound and outbound transportation expenses for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way
Housing:  A stipend supplement of $150 per week for interns that relocate more than fifty miles during their appointment

Location:  Available opportunities may be available at OTT headquarters, DOE national laboratories and other OTT-approved facilities across the U.S.  In response to the evolving situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, appointments may be hosted virtually.

Duration:  Internships will be for 10-12 consecutive weeks beginning in June 2022.

For those interested in the neurosciences who want lab experience
in neurological biomedical research

Applicants chosen to participate will receive stipends of $3,200 over the duration of the 8-week program. Limited housing stipends (no meals or transportation) are available for out-of-area students. Over 20 students from our earlier classes have now been accepted into medical school and other clinical training programs.

Simons Undergrad Fellowship for Neuroscience Research – Contact PI by 5/17

Simons Collaboration on the Global Brain (SCGB) has launched a fellowship for undergrad students to fund research projects in computational neuroscience.  The goal of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program is to spark and sustain interest in systems and computational neuroscience among undergrads from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in neuroscience research.

INFO SESSION: Intro to NSF GRFP & Hertz Fellowships

Dr. Vincent Holmberg, UW faculty member in Chemical Engineering and alumnus of the Hertz Fellowship, will share his insights on the program.
REGISTER FOR THIS SESSION 

The NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (NSF GRFP) funds approximately 2,000 awards per year for research-based graduate study in science and engineering.
AMOUNT: A $34,000 annual stipend and full cost of tuition and fees for 3 years.
ELIGIBILITY: U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent residents only, rising seniors and bachelor’s alumni planning to pursue research-based Master’s or PhD programs, current graduate students who have not previously applied while enrolled in a graduate program. More eligibility details here.
CRITERIA: Potential for significant contribution to scientific field and positive impact on society

The HERTZ FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP is awarded to 10-15 students per year who intend to pursue a PhD in the applied physical or biological sciences, mathematics or engineering.
AMOUNT: A $34,000 stipend and full cost of tuition and fees for up to 5 years.
ELIGIBILITY: U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent residents only; rising seniors, bachelor’s alumni and incoming graduate students (first-year graduate students in October 2021) planning to pursue a research-based PhD. More eligibility details here.

Paid Technology & National Security Fellowship for New Grads – Apply by 4/15

Will you graduate in Spring or Summer 2021?  This paid 1-year long Technology and National Security Fellowship based in Washington, D.C. with the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) may be for you!

DEADLINE:  Thursday, April 15

This is an opportunity for STEM/STEAM and other technologically minded recent grads (both undergrad and grad students) to work directly with senior leaders in the Department of Defense and with Members of Congress at the intersection of national security and technology.  The salary range for this highly competitive fellowship is between $73-134,000 depending on experienceA letter of recommendation is required.  Find more info about the program and application at https://www.nsin.us/tnsf/.

PROGRAM RUNS FROM AUGUST 2021 – AUGUST 2022

Throughout the yearlong program, Fellows will engage with policy makers and their immediate staff to help provide technical expertise and advice on a variety of critical subject areas.  TNSF is open to 15 U.S. citizens with an undergrad or graduate degree in a STEM or STEAM field with 2-3 years of experience.  Participants can possess a diverse skill set ranging from software development to policy research.

Selected Fellows must be:

– Recent or Imminent STEM graduates (or have meaningful equivalent work experience)
– U.S. citizens
– Have a desire to contribute their technical knowledge to the national security enterprise
– Willing to serve in non-partisan roles on the immediate staffs of key decision makers in Congress and at the Pentagon
– Willing to embed in a host office for a period of one (1) year
– Able to obtain a U.S. Government secret level security clearance
